A Sisters' Almanac — February 2025

This is the season to gently awaken and start to instill some vitality into our days.

1 — Reshuffle exercise routines by visiting The Method new wellness studio. This pop-up address on Westbourne Grove hosts brilliantly energising classes until a permanent space, The Club, opens later in the year. Their one-of-a-kind approach is simple: having a good time while exercising is the best way to keep it up. This is achieved thanks to passionate instructors who deliver fun and unusual classes, fuelled by upbeat dance music.

Failing to visit a studio, updating the soundtrack you exercise to will renew motivation and could be a change needed this time of year. We've put together 60 minutes of music here. Adding your own tracks that feel personal and remind you of special places or occasions will bring an extra mood lift.

2 — While the focus is on fitness, cooking nutritious meals should also be on the agenda. We highly rate Meera Sodha Butter Beans in salsa verde.

Finely chop 20g each of flat leaf parsley, basil and mint with 3 tablespoons of brined capers and one garlic clove. Add 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar and 5 tablespoons of olive oil. Set aside. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan, add a finely chopped onion and cook until soft (about 8 minutes). Take 2 jars of butter beans, remove about 3 tablespoons of the water they are preserved in and add to the pan, together with a sliced garlic clove and a sliced red chilli. Simmer for 10 minutes, stir in the salsa, add salt to taste.

3 — Organise half term activities in London and make the most of what's on offer on your doorstep.

Battersea Power Station is hosting the Light Festival with light installations, live performances and family-friendly workshops such as stained glass or various crafts. Reach it via a Thames Clipper from Embankment for added adventure on the river and visit the nearby Prospect Park Playground. Young artists should be interested in Picasso: printmaker at The British Museum. These works span the master's entire career and showcase the absolute variety of his art. The often funny, usually eye opening, Wildlife Photographer of the Year is on at the Natural History Museum and is an occasion to discover stories about nature and the wider world. Lastly, an enchanting display of Peruvian orchids at the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew celebrate biodiversity and promises a microcosm of this vibrant country until 2nd March.

4 — Keep outfitting simple and efficient by wearing the muted tones that befit the season. The deepest shade of grey, Charcoal is never complicated to match when worn in the shape of a skirt or as our perfected Alma dress. Lightly brushed cotton provides the comfort and warmth we're after at the moment. Add a thick knit and boots to get on with the day.

5 — Calendars should start to populate with events and trips to look forward to in the spring and Paris is always a good idea.

Major shows are on the agenda but we sway towards Modigliani/Zadkine which explores the short but fruitful friendship between both artists in Montparnasse between 1910 and 1920. Photographs reconstitute the atmosphere the painter and sculptor evolved in and provide context to their work (Musée Zadkine 100bis, rue d'Assas, 75006 Paris). It is filial affection that features in Matisse and Marguerite - Through her Father's Eyes at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris. These are deemed to be intimate works that illustrate the bond between the painter and his eldest daughter, who modelled for him over several decades. A different perspective on Matisse than last year's exhibition of the Red Studio. After Milan, Du Coeur à la Main Dolce&Gabbana is at the newly restored Grand Palais and proves the pair's love for Italy, their mastery of stunning savoir faire and the uniqueness of their style.
